What is a bunker price?

A bunker price is the price of marine fuel delivered to a ship, normally quoted in US dollars per metric tonne. Published prices are indicative: they show roughly where the market is at a port, but the price you actually pay is the firm quote a supplier gives you for your specific vessel, quantity and delivery window.

What are bunker prices today?

The table above shows the latest indicative price for each grade at each major bunkering port, updated daily. VLSFO is the standard 0.50% sulphur fuel used by most ships; HSFO is the 3.5% fuel used by vessels with scrubbers; MGO is the distillate used in emission control areas and by smaller vessels and yachts.

Why is the price I am quoted different from the published price?

Published prices are indicative averages. A real quote adds barge or delivery fees, reflects the quantity you are lifting, the delivery window, the specification, your payment terms and your credit standing with that supplier. The difference between the published number and the all-in delivered cost is routinely $10 to $40 per tonne.

What is the difference between VLSFO, HSFO and MGO?

VLSFO (very low sulphur fuel oil) has a maximum 0.50% sulphur content and is the default fuel since the IMO 2020 rules. HSFO (high sulphur fuel oil) has up to 3.5% sulphur and can only be burned by ships fitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. MGO (marine gas oil) is a cleaner distillate at 0.10% sulphur, required inside emission control areas and used by most yachts and smaller craft.
