A cheaper port is only cheaper after you have paid to get there. This nets deviation fuel, charter hire, port time and EU ETS off the headline price difference and tells you what is actually left.
How this works
- How do you calculate the real cost of bunkering at a different port?
- Take the price difference per tonne times the quantity, then subtract the fuel burned on the deviation, the charter hire consumed by the extra steaming and port time, any difference in port dues and agency, and the EU ETS allowances on the extra emissions. What is left is the real saving. On short deviations for small price gaps, it is frequently negative.
- Why does charter hire matter for a bunker decision?
- Because time on a ship is expensive. A supramax on $18,000 a day costs $750 an hour. A 60 nautical mile deviation at 13 knots is about 4.6 hours each way, so roughly $7,000 of hire plus the fuel burned — which wipes out a $7 per tonne saving on a 1,000 tonne stem before you have gained anything.
- Does this include EU ETS?
- Yes. Emissions are priced using the EU MRV CO2 factor for the grade, the geographic scope factor for the voyage (100% intra-EEA, 50% into or out of the EEA), the phase-in percentage for the year and the current EUA price. Ships under 5,000 GT are out of scope.
