- Marine gas oil typically runs between $0.55 and $0.95 per litre before duty and VAT, depending on the port. Remote yacht harbours in the Caribbean and the French Riviera sit at the top of that range; commercial hubs like Gibraltar and Malta sit at the bottom. Duty and VAT can then add 20% to 60% on top for a privately used vessel in EU waters.
- Why is marina fuel more expensive than commercial bunker fuel?
- Three reasons: volume, logistics and tax. A marina sells a few thousand litres at a time rather than hundreds of tonnes, so there is no volume discount. Delivery is by small truck or a short hose rather than a barge. And private pleasure craft pay duty and VAT that commercial vessels on international voyages generally do not.

- Marine gas oil is about 0.86 kg per litre at 15 degrees C, so one metric tonne is roughly 1,163 litres. Marine diesel and heavier grades are denser. This matters because yacht suppliers quote per litre and commercial suppliers quote per tonne, so the same fuel appears at two very different-looking prices.
