Taking fuel at Bremerhaven

Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.

Bremerhaven sits on the Weser and its bunkers are delivered afloat, by barge, not at a dedicated fuel jetty. When VARO opened its Bremerhaven service it put a single barge of 1,850 mt deadweight on the river to deliver very low sulphur fuel oil and 0.1% gasoil to ships in the port and surrounding area; the fuller heavy-fuel portfolio it runs at Hamburg was not offered here. The port lies inside the North Sea sulphur emission control area, so what you burn alongside must be at or below 0.10% sulphur.

For anything with a flash point below 55 degrees C, such as methanol or LNG, bremenports now runs a formal approval procedure. The port captain issues the instructions setting out how and when each step is done, and every party has to work to a documented plan before the stem is cleared. LNG has been bunkered here since 2015 and the ports declared themselves methanol-ready in 2025.

Ask the supplier for conventional stem limits and current grade availability, because the port's own published material does not state them.

Not published anywhere we could find
  • bremenports' methanol-ready release states neither a maximum conventional stem size nor a per-hour pumping rate.
  • It does not name which berths or anchorages permit simultaneous cargo and bunker operations.
  • VARO's own announcement offered its full HSFO portfolio only at Hamburg, so whether high sulphur fuel oil is currently available at Bremerhaven itself could not be confirmed.

Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.

Bremerhaven bunkering FAQ

What is the bunker price at Bremerhaven today?
The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Bremerhaven (DEBRV) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
Is Bremerhaven a cheap bunkering port?
At the last update Bremerhaven was showing $858/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
Does EU ETS apply at Bremerhaven?
Bremerhaven is in the EU/EEA, so voyages to, from and within it fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, and FuelEU Maritime applies to ships of 5,000 GT and above. That adds a real per-tonne cost that a headline bunker price does not show.
