Taking fuel at Antwerp

Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-30.

Antwerp bunkers roughly seven to eight million tonnes of conventional fuel a year, heavy fuel oil, low-sulphur oil and gas oil, available across the docks from operators licensed by the port authority; masters are expressly forbidden to take fuel from anyone else, and no maximum stem size is published. Delivery is by barge alongside, and a bunker vessel may lie alongside a seagoing ship only for the time the transfer strictly needs. Trucks cover small parcels: no licence is required for conventional fuel or biodiesel delivered by road tanker, but the terminal concessionaire must approve it, the ground must take the loaded vehicle and the truck must be immobilised. Bunkering under way is prohibited without the harbour master's permission, as is debunkering. Simultaneous operations with cargo are allowed, but only where the bunker operator, the ship and, where relevant, the terminal have jointly run an operation-specific risk assessment, agreed mitigations and appointed a person in overall control; expect that, rather than the pumping, to set the pace. Notification is digital and compulsory, every conventional or biodiesel stem being registered in the APICS bunker notification application before it starts, and since 1 January 2026 a certified Coriolis mass flow meter is mandatory on the bunker vessel for residual fuels, distillates and biofuels, with fines or licence withdrawal for breach. Weather bites: sustained wind above 18.2 m/s for ten minutes, or activation of the storm procedure, suspends all bunkering, and no new operation may be started or hose connected until the harbour master lifts it, exemptions for sheltered berths aside. LNG arrives by road tanker or bunker vessel; methanol, hydrogen and ammonia are handled case by case at mapped locations.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.

Antwerp bunkering FAQ

What is the bunker price at Antwerp today?
The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Antwerp (BEANR) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
Is Antwerp a cheap bunkering port?
At the last update Antwerp was showing $689/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
Does EU ETS apply at Antwerp?
Antwerp is in the EU/EEA, so voyages to, from and within it fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, and FuelEU Maritime applies to ships of 5,000 GT and above. That adds a real per-tonne cost that a headline bunker price does not show.
