Taking fuel at Mombasa

Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-09-02.

At Mombasa, bunkers are delivered by bunker barge, by road truck, or directly via pipeline at the Shimanzi Oil Terminal (SOT), which is the primary supply point for barges. Barging serves vessels at berth, at anchorage, and at designated offshore (OPL) rendezvous areas; trucks suit smaller MGO/lubricant stems. Suppliers include EPRA-licensed operators such as Alfoss Energy and One Petroleum (owner of Mbaraki Bulk Terminal), with VLSFO, HSFO, LSMGO/MGO available. Agents should provide at least 48 hours' notice for nominations, with a formal Request to Bunker, P&I/insurance details and SDS; review the supplier's Bunker Delivery Note format for MARPOL compliance. Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Revenue Authority supervise all operations: written notice of intention, joint ullaging/sounding before and after delivery, flow-meter readings, valve sealing, and a joint bunkering report signed by all parties are required. Mombasa is not an ECA — the IMO 2020 global 0.5% sulphur cap applies; KPA will not approve bunkering unless compliant fuel (or a scrubber / KMA-endorsed non-availability documentation) is confirmed. Offshore operations depend on weather; either master may suspend operations if unsafe.

Nearest published price

No price is published at Mombasa. The closest port where one is, is Port Louis, about 1,422 nautical miles away — VLSFO at $932 a tonne.

Port Louis →

That is Port Louis's price, not this port's, and the distance is a great-circle estimate rather than a routed passage. It is here because a benchmark you can see the distance to is more use than a blank space.

Indicative only. Typical stem time here is about 8 hours alongside.
