Belem sits about 120 km up the Para river from the Atlantic, and the river bar, not the berth, sets the ceiling: the Harbour Master of Western Amazon limits draft to the Tapana Bar depth of 7.92 m (26.0 ft), which applies at the Miramar terminal and the Belem port alike (Transpetro). Bunker grades available in port run to HSFO, VLSFO and MGO (ICCT). Alongside, Petrobras Transporte's Miramar terminal can transfer bunker grades (MGO/mixture) to ships at its two piers, but those piers take liquid-bulk ships only, with pier 1 rated to 15,000 DWT and 140 m LOA and pier 2 to 45,000 DWT and 210 m LOA; pilotage is compulsory for oil tankers over 2,000 GT. Brazil polices river pollution hard: any oil spill is a criminal matter under national law, so expect the supplier and Harbour Master to be strict on transfer procedure and to tolerate no spillage.
