Taking fuel at Abidjan
Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.
Abidjan is a lagoon port entered only through the Vridi channel, and the channel sets the ceiling on who can bunker here. The Port Autonome d'Abidjan harbour-master page gives a maximum vessel length of 250 m, a maximum draught of 38 ft (11.50 m), and 64 m of air draft under the electric cable crossing the channel, with tidal currents that reach 5 to 6 knots at high tide. Pilotage is compulsory and guaranteed 24 hours for vessels over 150 tons, towage is provided by IRES, and anchoring is forbidden in the Vridi entrance pass and within 75 m of the channel banks.
Bunkers are taken alongside at dedicated petroleum berths rather than at anchor: the harbour master lists Puma Energy (up to 240 m LOA, 11.50 m draught), PETROCI (200 m, 10.06 m), SIAP (180 m, 9.45 m) and PETROCI Soute (145 m, 10 m). Ships carrying dangerous goods must pre-notify 48 hours ahead with the UN number and IMDG class. Work VHF 12 for port operations, 16 for safety.
- The harbour-master page publishes no maximum bunker stem size; ask the supplier.
- The page lists bunkering only at the named petroleum berths and does not say whether barge delivery at the roadstead is permitted for a bunkers-only call.
- Fuel grades, specifications and notice period for a bunkers-only call are not stated by the port authority.
- The pilotage threshold is written as '150 tons' without specifying gross or net tonnage; confirm the basis with the agent.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
No price is published at Abidjan. The closest port where one is, is Las Palmas, about 1,514 nautical miles away — VLSFO at $761 a tonne.
Las Palmas →That is Las Palmas's price, not this port's, and the distance is a great-circle estimate rather than a routed passage. It is here because a benchmark you can see the distance to is more use than a blank space.
Indicative only. Typical stem time here is about 8 hours alongside.
