Bunkers at Chennai are supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) and Triton Bunkers Lines India Private Limited. Delivery is primarily barge-to-ship; truck-to-ship is available for LSMGO and HSD, notably at Ro-Ro berths. Bunkering can take place at berth or at anchorage — since March 2022 Chennai Port has supplied fuel by barge to vessels anchored about five nautical miles out, saving owners pilotage, berthing and wharfage charges. Buyers must send a Bunker Nomination (vessel name, IMO number, grades, quantity, ETA, delivery method) and give 72/48 hours approximate and 24 hours definite notice of arrival; vessel hose connections and max pumping pressure must be advised 48 hours ahead. Deliveries run day and night but exclude Saturdays, Sundays and public/port holidays, and are subject to weather, Customs and port permissions; all statutory permits must be in place. Fuels include VLSFO (0.5%S, ISO 8217 RMG380) and LSMGO (0.1%S). Chennai is not in an ECA; since 2020, fuel above 0.5%S requires prior DGS approval submitted 48 hours before delivery.
