Rio de Janeiro is one of South America's largest bunkering ports, with supply by bunker barge either at berth or in the Inner Anchorage Area 01, subject to Port Authority authorization and queuing; if no inner-anchorage space exists on arrival, vessels wait outside for pilot instructions. An oil boom (oil barrier) must be deployed from the bunker barge's arrival alongside until its departure. Petrobras supplies bunker C, MGO, MDO and other fuels at international prices on advance order — bunker orders at least 72 hours before arrival and lubricants 3 days (foreign vessels) / 5 days (national) ahead. Buyers must give 72/48/24/12-hour arrival notices, and Seller may require shifting to another berth or use of extra barges. Note the Rio–Niterói bridge (60 m air draft); vessels with air draft over 50 m need local authorization 48 hours before arrival. Anchoring off-port-limits is no longer permitted without authorization. Rio is not in an ECA.
