Taking fuel at Augusta

Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.

Augusta is the largest natural harbour in the lower Mediterranean and Italy's principal oil port, which is the setting any bunker call here sits in. The port-system authority describes a basin sheltered by roughly 6.5 km of breakwater with two entrances, divided into an external roadstead and an internal roadstead (the porto megarese), alongside a refining and petrochemical complex. Water is deep: average draughts of 14 to 18 m, with points reaching 22 m, across 43 berths. As an EU port inside the Mediterranean SOx Emission Control Area, EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime obligations apply to the call.

Navigation, moorings, commercial traffic, maritime services and port police are governed by the Capitaneria di Porto di Augusta under its consolidated port regulation, Ordinanza 76/2025, with individual vessel movements set by its ordinances. Treat the specific bunkering arrangements here — barge versus shore pipeline, which berths or roadstead points may be used, and any maximum stem — as items to settle with the supplier and agent against that regulation.

Not published anywhere we could find
  • The consolidated Augusta port regulation (Ordinanza 76/2025) was identified but its full text was not read, so its bunkering clauses are unconfirmed.
  • How bunkers are delivered at Augusta — barge alongside, at the roadstead, or by shore pipeline — is not confirmed from a fetched port source.
  • No maximum stem size is published by the port authority.
  • The specific berths or roadstead points designated for bunkering are not confirmed from a fetched source.
  • The suppliers active at Augusta were not verified against a port-authority or supplier document.

Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.

Augusta bunkering FAQ

What is the bunker price at Augusta today?
The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Augusta (ITAUG) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
Is Augusta a cheap bunkering port?
At the last update Augusta was showing $861/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
Does EU ETS apply at Augusta?
Augusta is in the EU/EEA, so voyages to, from and within it fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, and FuelEU Maritime applies to ships of 5,000 GT and above. That adds a real per-tonne cost that a headline bunker price does not show.
