Taking fuel at Malta
Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.
Malta takes bunkers two ways. Inside the harbours - Valletta and Marsaxlokk - bunkering is allowed at the terminals, subject to the Dangerous Cargo Ships, Marine Terminals and Facilities and Bunkering Regulations and to prior notification. Most stems, though, are done offshore: you are sent to one of five designated bunkering areas around the island, and Vessel Traffic Services (part of the Ports and Yachting Directorate) allocates the area on arrival according to the weather and the type of vessel, so you do not choose it yourself. Delivery is by barge - a fleet of seventeen privately owned bunker barges works this trade.
Pilotage is compulsory at 500 GT and over. The binding fuel constraint is European, not local: at an EU berth you must be on fuel of no more than 0.10% sulphur, changing over as soon as possible after arrival and as late as possible before departure.
- The Directorate page does not publish a maximum stem size - it must be put to the supplier.
- It does not give the coordinates or depth/size limits of the five areas on the page itself; those sit in separate linked documents.
- It does not state a weather or sea-state threshold at which offshore bunkering is suspended.
- It does not say whether any one area is reserved for larger tankers; allocation is left to VTS discretion.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.
Malta bunkering FAQ
- What is the bunker price at Malta today?
- The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Malta (MTMLA) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
- Is Malta a cheap bunkering port?
- At the last update Malta was showing $775/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
- Does EU ETS apply at Malta?
- Malta is in the EU/EEA, so voyages to, from and within it fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, and FuelEU Maritime applies to ships of 5,000 GT and above. That adds a real per-tonne cost that a headline bunker price does not show.
