Taking fuel at Los Angeles
Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-09-02.
Bunkers at Los Angeles/Long Beach (San Pedro Bay) are delivered by barge at anchorage or at berth, and by truck or pipeline at selected terminals. The Jankovich Company operates five double-hull tank barges from Berth 74, San Pedro, and can deliver over 500,000 gallons in a single lift, dockside or at anchor, 24/7; Clipper Oil and others serve the commercial docks from San Pedro to Terminal Island and the Southeast Basin. Nomination lead time is typically 3-5 days, and pilots require a minimum of two hours' notice for port service. The port lies within the North American Emission Control Area: fuel of 0.10% sulphur or less is required within 200 nm of the coast, so the market is dominated by VLSFO and LSMGO. CARB additionally requires 0.1% sulphur fuel within 24 nm of the California coast and mandates shore power (AMP) or an approved emission control system for container, cruise, reefer, Ro-Ro and tanker fleets at berth since January 2025. Fog (May-August) can delay barge movements.
- night bunkering restrictions
- designated bunker anchorage assignments
- bunker barge congestion/queue times
- sampling and dispute procedures
- debunkering availability broadly
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.
Los Angeles bunkering FAQ
- What is the bunker price at Los Angeles today?
- The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Los Angeles (USLAX) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
- Is Los Angeles a cheap bunkering port?
- At the last update Los Angeles was showing $1012/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
- Does EU ETS apply at Los Angeles?
- Los Angeles is outside the EU/EEA, so EU ETS does not apply to a call here in itself. It may still apply to the voyage legs if your vessel is heading to or from an EU port.
