Taking fuel at Klaipeda

Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.

Klaipeda is Lithuania's deep-water gateway on the Baltic and one of the few ice-free ports in the north-eastern Baltic, so it works year-round without an ice season shutting bunkering down. The approach channel has been dredged to 15.5 m and the port can take ships up to about 400 m long with draughts up to 14.3 m, so large vessels can be serviced at the quay.

You are inside the Baltic ECA, which is the single most important operational point for a client here: you must burn an ECA-compliant grade, in practice a low-sulphur distillate, and EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime apply on top.

The port is pushing hard into alternative fuels — methanol-powered box ships already call, a green-methanol bunker vessel is being designed for local shallow-water bunkering routes, and a green-hydrogen production and supply station opened in 2026. Conventional fuel-oil bunkering, however, is not described in the port authority's public material that could be read for this note, so the delivery arrangements should be settled directly with the supplier.

Not published anywhere we could find
  • The port-authority pages that could be reached do not describe conventional fuel-oil bunkering — delivery mode (barge versus road tanker), designated bunker berths, or a maximum stem size are not published.
  • Whether conventional bunkering is done alongside or at anchorage, and any advance-notice period, is not stated in the material read.
  • LNG bunkering is reported in trade press, but the port-authority pages read do not set out its rules or the locations where it is permitted.
  • The channel depth and maximum vessel figures come from an encyclopedia entry, not from a port-authority document, and should be reconfirmed against the current port handbook.

Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.

Not an offer to sell — a firm price exists only once a supplier has quoted.

A lower headline price at another port is not automatically a saving. Deviation burns fuel and charter hire, and a bunker-only call costs port time.

Klaipeda bunkering FAQ

What is the bunker price at Klaipeda today?
The table above shows the latest indicative prices at Klaipeda (LTKLJ) for each grade we track, updated daily. These are market indications, not offers — the price you pay depends on quantity, delivery window, specification, your payment terms and your credit position with the supplier.
Is Klaipeda a cheap bunkering port?
At the last update Klaipeda was showing $623/MT for VLSFO. Whether that is genuinely cheap for your vessel depends on deviation: reaching a port that is $10/MT cheaper is not a saving if it costs a day of charter hire and the fuel burned getting there.
Does EU ETS apply at Klaipeda?
Klaipeda is in the EU/EEA, so voyages to, from and within it fall under the EU Emissions Trading System, and FuelEU Maritime applies to ships of 5,000 GT and above. That adds a real per-tonne cost that a headline bunker price does not show.
