Baltimore sits at the head of the Patapsco River, the deepest harbour in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, reached by the Fort McHenry Federal Channel, which is 700 feet wide and 50 feet deep to the terminals. That channel is the whole approach, and it is worth remembering why that matters here: when the container ship Dali brought down the Francis Scott Key Bridge on 26 March 2024 the channel was blocked, and it was certified fully restored to its 700-by-50 dimensions only on 10 June 2024.
