Ceuta is one of the Strait of Gibraltar's main bunkering calls, and it takes fuel two ways. A ship can lie alongside and take product ex-pipe at the Poniente quay, or it can bunker by barge while at anchor in the bay, which lets the port serve vessels too large or too busy to berth. Vilma Oil is one of the physical suppliers here, and recent berthing works were promoted as letting bigger ships bunker at Ceuta than before. One recent change matters for quantity: mass flow meters are now mandatory for bunker deliveries at Ceuta, so the delivered figure is metered rather than taken from tank soundings — expect the barge's MFM totaliser to be the reference number in any dispute. Ceuta lies inside the Mediterranean SOx Emission Control Area, so since 1 May 2025 fuel must be at or below 0.10% sulphur unless the ship runs an approved scrubber.
