Las Palmas is a volume port. The Autoridad Portuaria's 2024 figures, reported by Diario del Puerto, are 2.6 million tonnes supplied, up 28 per cent, of which 74 per cent went by barge and the rest through pipelines: 5,004 barge operations delivering close to two million tonnes, seven working barges, 588,000 cubic metres of tankage and more than eight kilometres of supply lines on the quays. Over 91 per cent of the tonnage was low sulphur, more than half of that VLSFO.
The rule that shapes your options is the Capitania Maritima's April 2019 instruction: a barge must have two shafts and two rudders, "dos ejes (helices) y dos timones", to have manoeuvrability enough to approach and come alongside safely. The Capitan Maritimo has defended it publicly on the grounds that the Las Palmas anchorage "no esta muy abrigado" and its traffic density is far above Tenerife's. One single-shaft barge that fails the test now loads at Las Palmas and delivers at Santa Cruz de Tenerife instead. If a barge is nominated to you at anchorage, check that Capitania will let that particular unit work here.
- The Autoridad Portuaria's own site, palmasport.es, would not respond at all from here today, so the port's figures reach this note only through trade press quoting it and could not be checked against the source.
- No source states which berths, or how many, actually have a pipeline connection; the eight kilometres of quayside lines cannot be mapped to a berth list, so ask the supplier whether yours can be supplied in line.
- No published maximum stem, barge pumping rate or nomination lead time.
- No official statement of service hours, or of whether barge supply runs through the night.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
