Guayaquil is a tidal river port about 10 km from the city, reached from the sea buoy by a long dredged channel. The Logistics Cluster assessment describes a 92 km access channel, maintained under a 25-year contract by Canal de Guayaquil (a Jan De Nul subsidiary), deepened from 9.5 m to 12.5 to 13 m 'with tidal benefit', with the Los Goles rock removed. That tidal benefit matters — deep-draught arrivals work the tide — and the same assessment warns bluntly that this is a natural river-type port with 'no good bottom for anchoring'.
The berths line the Guayas River: the public Sea Port (Contecon's container quays and Andipuerto's bulk terminal) and the Isla Trinitaria terminals (TPG, Bananapuerto, Puerto Trinitaria), where the assessment caps draught at 9.75 m, while conventional and container berths are dredged to about 10.5 m. Bunkers are arranged through Petrocomercial / EP Petroecuador and private suppliers and taken alongside rather than at anchor. Four harbour tugs handle berthing.
