Auckland is effectively a one-barge port. Ports of Auckland's handbook calls the Seafuels-owned Awanuia the primary bunker service and says she will bunker alongside all commercial wharves in the harbour, carrying up to 2,900MT of 380cst HFO and 600MT of MGO, at 400MT per hour per pump for 380cst and up to 750MT per hour overall. Products can be bunkered simultaneously, no tug services are required to move vessels to bunker points, and you can bunker in parallel while loading or unloading cargo; bunkering under anchorage is offered too, with anchorage fees applying.
Expect two notifications rather than one. Every vessel bunkering within port limits must complete a Bunkering Notification Form and return it to the Harbourmaster, and the port's terms of entry add that Harbourmaster permission is to be obtained, with SOPEP pollution precautions in place and suppliers holding Tier 1 plans. Separately, Auckland Transport requires commercial operators providing bunkers to notify the Harbourmaster's office 24 hours before the transfer, under the Auckland Council Navigation Bylaw 2021.
- Neither POAL nor Auckland Transport publishes a minimum parcel size or a maximum stem beyond the Awanuia's own tank capacity, and no lead time is given for booking the barge itself as distinct from the harbourmaster notifications.
- POAL's bunkering page markets MARPOL-compliant VLSFO and MGO by barge, while the same page's capacity line and the handbook both state 380cst HFO and MGO; which grades are actually carried at a given call is not resolved by either source.
- Nothing published says what happens if the Awanuia is committed elsewhere: no second barge, and no road-tanker option, is named by POAL or Auckland Transport.
- Whether the POAL Bunkering Notification Form and Auckland Transport's 24-hour notice are one step or two is not stated outright. AT's online form says a submission notifies both the Harbourmaster's office and Ports of Auckland, but only for nine named wharves (Bledisloe, Captain Cook, Fergusson, Freyberg, Jellicoe, Marsden, Princes, Queens, Tug Pen).
- The Harbourmaster's power to forbid an operation from commencing or continuing appears in both sources only under hot work, not under bunkering, so no such power over bunkering is asserted above.
- The POAL handbook read here is dated 06.10.23 / Nov 2023 and is the most recent version published; no newer edition could be found.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
