At Sohar bunkers go aboard by barge, both inside the port basin and out at the anchorage. Oman Oil Marketing Company (OOMCO) operates the licensed 10,000-tonne barge MT Alpha, supplying VLSFO 0.5%, low-sulphur MGO 0.1% and HSFO 3.5% at rates up to 1,000 m3/h, at the port and within the anchorage area. Bunkering and ship-to-ship transfers are handled at the eastern anchorages: the port's own information guide assigns Anchorage C and E for bunkering operations and STS, while Anchorage A is a waiting area and B and D are for lay-up, repairs, crew change and marine supply. STS needs the Harbourmaster's approval, weighed on weather, technical and safety grounds.
Since January 2025 Sohar requires ISO 22192 mass-flow meters for marine-fuel deliveries, so quantity is metered on the barge to inside 0.5% - a point worth confirming on delivery. Book through your agent, who arranges the supplier. Note the port bans hull cleaning, propeller polishing and incinerator use.
- The information guide gives coordinates for the bunkering anchorages (C and E) but no depths, so under-keel clearance must be confirmed with the supplier.
- No maximum per-vessel stem size is published; the 10,000 t figure is the barge's capacity, not a per-call limit.
- The guide states no minimum notice period for a bunker-only call.
- The guide does not confirm whether more than one supplier is licensed or whether HSFO delivery requires a scrubber declaration.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
