Savannah is a river port: Garden City Terminal lies about 18 miles up the Savannah River from the sea, and bunkers come to the ship by barge alongside the berth. The operation on the public record is an LNG one — in April 2024 the articulated tug-barge Clean Canaveral put roughly 4,600 cubic metres of LNG into the 15,000-TEU CMA CGM SYMI at Garden City, working simultaneously with cargo (SIMOPS) under Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Savannah oversight, with JAX LNG, Seaside LNG and McAllister the parties. It was billed as the first LNG SIMOPS bunkering of a 15,000-TEU ship in the United States.
Two physical limits shape any call. The federal channel carries 47 feet, deepened under the harbour expansion, so draft is generous but finite. Overhead, the Talmadge Memorial Bridge fixes air draft at 185 feet for anything transiting to the terminals above it — the hard ceiling on the box ships Savannah serves. Grade, quantity and supplier are a nomination matter to settle before arrival.
- I could not confirm from an authoritative page which conventional grades (VLSFO, HSFO, MGO) are available by barge, or which suppliers work the river — only the LNG operation is documented.
- No published maximum conventional stem size was found.
- The sources give no port-authority rule specifically governing bunker-barge or SIMOPS operations beyond the single documented LNG case.
