Charleston takes bunkers by barge — there is no dedicated bunker berth, so a stem is either put alongside at your working berth up the Cooper or Wando or lifted at the inshore anchorage the Charleston Branch Pilots set aside for bunkering and marine services, the triangle westward of where Rebellion Reach meets South Channel. The pilots note that anchorage is currently held to a maximum 30 ft draft, so a deeper ship bunkers alongside or waits offshore, dropping anchor about 3 nautical miles north or south of the 'C' buoy. The entrance channel carries 52 ft at mean lower low water on a tidal range of roughly 4.8 ft. Air draft governs the upper harbour: the Arthur Ravenel (Cooper River) bridge gives 192 ft at any tide and only a little more near low water, the Don Holt (I-526) bridge 155 ft. This is North American ECA water, so plan on 0.10% sulphur fuel, and arrange the stem through your agent and the pilots' 24-hour dispatcher.
