Mobile takes its bunkers by barge. Atlantic Gulf Bunkering began here running a 2,800-tonne double-hull barge and delivers across Mobile, Gulfport and Pascagoula, offering intermediate fuel oils from 30 to 380 cSt, low sulphur fuel oil, marine gas oil, marine diesel oil and low-sulphur MGO; the same firm also supplies by road tanker through the wider Gulf region. Earlier, Shell ran fuel-oil storage at the Radcliff/Economy terminal and fed a double-hull bunker barge from there. So the fuel reaches you afloat, out of local river terminals, with truck delivery also in use.
Mobile lies within the North American emission control area, so at the berth the sulphur cap is 0.10%; plan on distillate or a compliant low-sulphur residual rather than straight high sulphur fuel oil.
Pin the pumpable rate and the largest single stem down with the supplier, because neither the barge operators' announcements nor the port authority publish a per-hour rate or a maximum stem for Mobile.
- Neither Atlantic Gulf Bunkering's launch announcement nor the Shell terminal report states a pumping rate or a maximum stem size at Mobile.
- The Alabama State Port Authority's public tariff pages did not yield a readable bunkering or fuel-transfer rule.
- Whether bunkering may be done at anchorage or only alongside at Mobile is not stated in the sources found.
- Shell's terminal report dates from 2005, so its bunker barge and Radcliff/Economy storage may no longer reflect current arrangements.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
