Hamburg is blunt about anchoring. The Port Information Guide prohibits it outside the line of the channel buoyage in the river Elbe and the Koehlbrand, and in other areas, unless the Hamburg Port Authority has permitted it, allowing it otherwise only where required to avoid dangerous situations. The port area works 24/7. On grades the guide says only that all kinds of fuels and lubrication oils are available; it sets no notice period, no maximum stem and no pumping rule for bunkering.
Watch the timing rather than the barge. Ships approaching and leaving the port may be assigned a tidal window depending on the water depths at the berth, of the river or the tide forecast. That wording is not confined to deep-draught ships, so the berth window can end up dictating when the stem happens.
For alternative fuels, HPA released Waltershofer Hafen for ship-to-ship methanol and LNG bunkering on 28 August 2025, at the Burchardkai and Predoehlkai container terminals; Cruise Center Steinwerder has had LNG since 2019 and methanol since 2024. HPA states it is not itself active in the bunker market.
- The Port Information Guide sets no bunkering notice period, no maximum stem size and no pumping-rate rule; its only bunker-specific clause is that spills must be reported immediately to Hamburg Port Traffic on VHF Channel 14.
- The PIG clause allowing supply by truck or barge during loading or discharging, except on tanker berths, sits under 'Stores' (16.5), not under fuel (16.2), so whether it governs bunker deliveries is not published and is not asserted above.
- HPA says bunkering is carried out by independent companies but publishes no list of licensed bunker suppliers, barges or barge capacities; no count of firms serving the port could be sourced from an authority document.
- The Port Bunker Map is dated 06/2025 and gives locations only: biofuel bunker-ready portwide, LNG and methanol at three named terminals, with LNG, methanol and ammonia portwide 'until end of 2026'. No capacities, barge names or lead times.
- Nothing published states whether conventional bunkering may run simultaneously with cargo operations, or what approval that would need.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
