Izmir is a naturally sheltered general-cargo and container port at the head of Izmir Bay, and bunkering here is a modest, road-fed business rather than a barge hub. The Alsancak agents state that most grades of marine fuel and lubricants are available by truck on 24 hours' notice, so a stem is planned to coincide with your alongside time at one of the port's berths rather than lifted at anchor. Pilotage is compulsory, taken from the Turkish authority on VHF 16 and 12, and three tugs of up to 2,500 hp are on hand. The quays run to about 3,319 m over 24 berths; the deepest reach around 13 m, which is also the working draft for boxships and Ro-Ro, while tankers are held nearer 10.5 m. There are no daylight restrictions on berthing. Izmir lies inside the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area, so 0.10% sulphur fuel is the working assumption. If the port is congested you wait your turn at one of the five designated anchorages.
