Merchant ships take bunkers by barge in the harbour. Vitol's Sydney vessel is ICS Allegiance, 92.70 m by 18.60 m, 4,400 MT MFO and 1,350 MT MGO, backed by dumb barges FBA 1 and FBA 2 at 175 and 350 MT pumping 200 MT/hr for additional capacity during peak demand. Watch the grade: Viva Energy publishes MFO 380 as available in the ports of Sydney, Pinkenba, Melbourne and Geelong, but its VLSFO only in Melbourne and Geelong. Viva also runs the White Bay 6 Marina fuel facility in White Bay: vessels up to 70 metres, wharf fendering designed for vessels up to 6,000 tonnes, dispensers rated 200 to 1,000 litres a minute.
The Harbour Master Directions in force from June 2026 want a permit through Sydney VTS and the Vessel Booking System 24 hours ahead alongside and 48 hours at anchor, unless bunkers are received at White Bay 6. Anchor transfers are assessed case by case on a joint risk assessment lodged 48 hours ahead covering vessel interaction, use of propulsion and weather limits, and there is no declared anchorage within Port Botany port limits.
- The Harbour Master Directions name White Bay 6 only as an exemption from the bunker permit; they do not describe the facility, name its operator or list its grades, and no Port Authority source was found confirming that it is the same berth as Viva Energy's White Bay 6 Marina.
- The Port Authority publishes no maximum stem size, pumping rate or lead time for bunkering; every such figure here comes from a supplier's own page.
- No Port Authority list of licensed Sydney bunker suppliers or approved bunker barges was found.
- Viva does not say which Sydney wharves take MFO 380 by pipeline rather than by barge, and its Sydney residual grade is published only as MFO 380.
- Designated anchorage positions and their limits sit in the separate Berths and Channels document, which was not read for this note.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
