Alexandria works the West harbour only; the authority states the East harbour is shallow and not used in navigation. Entry is through a 400 m gap, then one of two straits: the Large Strait, 220 m wide and 14 m deep, or the Small Strait at 100 m and 9 m. Pilotage is compulsory arriving and departing. Towage is not mandatory for loads of zero to 999 tons; 1,000 tons or more requires tugs for the total load.
Alongside bunkering belongs to the Sixth Zone, the Oil Dock at the end of the western boundaries: petroleum berths 87/1 to 87/5, for edible oil, oil products and vessel bunkering. Nothing is stored behind them. The authority says the port has no oil storage facilities, the berths connect to a refinery through a 2 km pipeline, and no terminals, store houses or yards exist in that zone.
EDT supplies marine gas oil at Alexandria by bunker barge or truck, and extends deliveries to anchorages or offshore outside territorial waters. Minerva lists Alexandria among its Egyptian ports for MGO, VLSFO and HSFO. The authority's own supplies entry still names Shell-Egypt, Mobil-Egypt and Esso by telegraph address, so check who is licensed.
- The authority gives no maximum LOA, beam or draught for petroleum berths 87/1 to 87/5, and does not say which of the five actually take bunkering rather than edible oil.
- No maximum stem size, barge capacity or pumping rate is published by the port authority or by either supplier.
- EDT names anchorage and offshore delivery but publishes no lead time, no minimum quantity and no anchorage position.
- Neither supplier states whether residual grades can be delivered at Alexandria by road tanker or only by barge.
- The authority publishes no current list of licensed bunker suppliers; its Bunkering and Supplies entry gives only company names and telegraph addresses.
