Rio Grande lies inside the freshwater Lagoa dos Patos, so water density shifts noticeably with wind and tide — worth remembering when planning drafts. Bunkering is taken either at anchorage or alongside. The port guide designates the Golf anchorage for vessels working the Porto Alegre and Pelotas terminals, bunkering and repairs, with a maximum draft of 6.70 m; Golf is split into Golf I (up to 120 m LOA), Golf II (up to 190 m) and Golf III (over 225 m). The Echo anchorage takes vessels up to 190 m and 9.5 m draft, and the Alfa zone is for pilot boarding, closed to anchoring except in emergencies. Any anchorage must be booked with the Port Authority at least 24 hours before arrival.
Alongside, the guide marks bunkering as permitted at the Termasa, Tergrasa and Bianchini grain berths but not at Bunge; fresh-water draft at those berths runs to 13.60 m (12.80 m at Bunge).
- The port guide does not state how bunkers are physically delivered (barge versus pipeline) or give any maximum stem size or flow rate.
- Whether HSFO is supplied, or only VLSFO and LSMGO, is not stated in the sources read.
- The guide gives anchorage LOA/draft limits but no maximum draft governing a bunker-only call alongside the grain berths.
