Hambantota gives you two ways to take fuel. Since January 2025 the port has run what it calls Sri Lanka's first shore-based bunker tank farm: a dedicated high-sulphur fuel oil facility of 6,000 cubic metres across two tanks, pumped through a pipeline that runs directly to the port's oil jetties at 400 metric tonnes an hour, so a scrubber-fitted ship can take HSFO alongside. VLSFO and marine gas oil (MGO/MDO) are the other grades offered; the facility was proved with a discharge of 5,000 t HSFO and 20,000 t VLSFO from the Grand Ace 10 between 30 January and 1 February. Away from the berth, bunkers are delivered offshore at the Hambantota anchorage by the oil barge m.v. Kumana, chartered to Lanka Marine Services by the port. Wholesale fuel comes in through Sinopec Fuel Oil Lanka, with licensed local suppliers doing the physical delivery on the busy east-west route.
- HIP does not publish a maximum stem size for either the jetty pipeline delivery or the barge m.v. Kumana.
- Whether jetty (pipeline) bunkering is open to any caller or tied to cargo calls at the oil jetties is not stated on HIP's pages.
- Availability of bunkering at Outer Port Limits (OPL) is not confirmed on HIP's own pages, only in third-party reporting.
- Draught alongside the oil jetties is not published on the bunkering pages read.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
