Taking fuel at Lyttelton
Operational notes, from the port authority and the suppliers’ own published documents. Checked 2026-08-31.
At Lyttelton the fuel is worked at the liquid bulk terminal, which lies off Godley Quay next to the oil wharf. Lyttelton Port Company owns the terminal and several oil companies operate it; it runs around the clock, discharging liquid cargoes — LPG, petroleum, aviation gas, bitumen and methanol — and also bunkering vessels. LPC publishes maximum bunkering rates of 90 tonnes per hour for light fuel oil and 85 tonnes per hour for marine diesel. The grades a supplier will quote here are MGO, VLSFO, HSFO and ULSD. Because LPC describes the bunkering as part of that terminal's work, a stem is scheduled around the terminal's own discharge slots and berth availability, so timing hinges on the wharf being clear. Treat the published figures as terminal maxima rather than a guaranteed pumping speed for your particular grade, and confirm the actual delivery arrangement with the supplier before you fix.
- LPC does not publish a maximum stem size for bunkers.
- Neither LPC nor the supplier page states whether a given grade is delivered ex-wharf by pipeline, by road tanker, or by barge.
- I could not open a primary Maritime NZ rule page (Part 103 returned 403) to confirm the exact advance-notification requirement for an oil transfer / bunkering at Lyttelton, so the notice procedure is unconfirmed here.
- No lead-time figure for arranging a stem is published by LPC or the supplier page.
Ask the supplier to confirm these before you fix a stem on them.
No price is published at Lyttelton. The closest port where one is, is Manila, about 4,498 nautical miles away — VLSFO at $1002 a tonne.
Manila →That is Manila's price, not this port's, and the distance is a great-circle estimate rather than a routed passage. It is here because a benchmark you can see the distance to is more use than a blank space.
Indicative only. Typical stem time here is about 8 hours alongside.
