At Walvis Bay fuel reaches ships three ways: by pipeline at Berths 1 to 5, by road tanker at the other cargo berths, and by barge to vessels lying at anchor. The barge route is run by Engen with the MT Sarah, a 77.4 m by 10.6 m tanker of 1,372 GT and 1,975 t deadweight that carries up to 2,000 MT and pumps at 200 cubic metres an hour; it supplies gasoil to rigs, support craft and passing vessels at anchorage at both Walvis Bay and Luderitz.
Bunker transfers in the inner anchorage are not automatic — they need prior approval from the Marine Division of the Department of Transport and the Port Captain, and are monitored. The entrance channel runs 5.2 nautical miles at 134 m wide and -14 m chart datum, which sets the size of ship the port can take alongside.
